One of the more intriguing matchups at the recent WWE Wrestlemania 23 ended up producing a rare turn of opinion for the evil one . . . by the end of the Chris Benoit-MVP match, even after a loss, I was fulfledged MVP fan. There it is, for all to see: Mr. Mal digs MVP. And Chris Benoit is the one that made it possible. Too often, fans fail to realize it truly does take two to tango inside the squared circle. One solid performer can look horrible against someone who can’t work a lick. Luckily for MVP, Benoit can work with almost anyone. And at Mania? He and MVP turned in a solid, solid match that has now carried over to Smackdown.

MVP, while still in need of some refinement in the character department (please, for the love of Lou Thesz, ditch that ridiculous inflatable domed-entrance thing he continues to come to the ring through on Smackdown. Sans tunnel avec cheerleaders worked way, way better at ‘Mania. This needs to stick and stay. Also - his outfits. The red and the white looked sharp. Ditch the garish purples and blues with gold trims. Classic colors speak better as to the legitimacy of the performer, especially one who is supposed to be an MVP.

As for Benoit? Once again, he is lost amid the shuffle of performers - even with a title around his waist. Still an outstanding performer, he really needs to put MVP over in this ongoing feud - and then promptly leave for Raw, or even ECW. He is in desperate need of a spark, as has so often happened to him in his career. Just shy on the charisma scale to be a true Superstar (in the WWE-sense) Benoit, especially at this point in his career, inevitably will now be put in a position to make more performers than he will be asked to be made by others. Frankly, he’s already peaked in his career (and trust me, Mr. Mal knows. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Benoit now for almost 20-years since his Stampede Wrestling days). That’s fine - that’s how wrestling works. He can start with MVP. This feud is gaining my interest . . .
