Bullgod says Cena’s odd behavior deserving of heel heat

The Bullgod feels like he is phoning it in slightly this week as this ramble is going to seem more like a rant. I know the writing in WWE has been bad for a while now and most fans have just learned to accept it but it has been a struggle just to watch WWE RAW and Smackdown for the past few weeks or so, and anything involving Cena has been embarrassing. Now this is what I mean when I say I am just phoning it in because everybody has their own opinion on Cena but I just don’t understand what the writers are thinking in the way they are using him at the moment. While he was still at mid-card level he was an effective heel over on smackdown because as a performer he has the talent to pull of the heel gangster rapper gimmick well and his in ring ability (or lack there of . . . just my opinion) is a very green, very limited, smash mouth style, which suits WWE’s mid-card. Two-to-three years later and he is Vince McMahon’s new marketing machine and pushed to the moon for extensive periods of time. Now I can only speak for myself here but personally I resented Cena being pushed as the top guy because his in ring ability is far too limited and he needs to work with somebody that can make a great match in order to look good (Edge, Michaels, etc). But that being considered, trying to be unbiased, I would say that a large portion of his criticism come from the fact that it has become ‘cool’ for smart marks and internet fans to hate Cena.
But just as I had come to that conclusion a few weeks ago, I started seeing a common phrase appear among wrestling columns, not too much unlike this one, that “Cena is a great worker”. Now I am assuming that people are just getting their terminology wrong because I can’t see how even the most hardened Cena (smart) fan could say that he is a great worker. But the more I read the more I started seeing phrases like “He has held the company on his shoulders” and “He never takes time off”, which are both fair points but working hard and being a good worker are two totally different things in this business. As much as I respect the hard work and dedication that John Cena puts in this doesn’t make up for his lack of in ring ability to the point of him being worthy of being the 7th longest reigning WWE World Champion and the first in 18 years to hold the title for over a year. John is not the only WWE Superstar to put in 110% day in day out, take Matt Hardy for example. Matt has great in ring ability, decent promo skills, is way over and seems to appear at every show possible. At one point he was wrestling both WWE RAW and Smackdown shows having a singles run as well as a tag title run with Jeff on RAW, yet he isn’t pushed to main even status, and why? Because young fans don’t want to dress up has him? Because he isn’t shredded like a He-Man action figure? Then again, as I documented in last weeks article, Vince loves his super hero-esque stars at the top of the card.
Any WrestlersRamblings fan reading this, please, I would like to hear your opinion on your WWE Champ: John Cena, since I have made u read though mine. I may be way off the mark so please let me know your opinion of Cena and your answer to the question: Is it cool to hate John Cena?
Now onto what I was originally wanting to talk about, the current writing in regards to John Cena. It has got to the point now where Cena could cut the most stellar promo that would blow even The Rock away and the boo birds would still be on his back. Winning PRO WRESTLING fans over would take vast, consistent improvement to his in ring ability, putting on matches similar to that which he had with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania and on raw a few weeks later. But since that isn’t going to happen he needs to keep doing what his fan base love (and lets be honest, I hate to stereotype but a lot of young fans and casual fans make up this ‘chain gang’ of his). So why are the writing team hell bent on making him look like a heel at times and putting him on camera cutting promos that
show his flaws.
1. Three weeks ago on WWE RAW they needed to get William Regal off television for a while so he could sit out his month suspension with a valid reason. Regal in my eyes is a tweener, neither heel or face, and was over at Summerslam having a bit dance with Vince and co just weeks earlier. So Regal is in the ring to announce that he is giving Cena what he wants, a shot at revenge at Randy Orton for what Randy did to Cena’s father, but in return Cena would have the title on the line against Orton. So why did Cena go nuts and attack Regal? Hulk Hogan never drank his milk, took his vitamins, said his prayers and randomly attack one of his bosses for just doing his job. Not very babyface like behaviour.
2. The week before the Unforgiven PPV Cena is involved in an angle backstage with Vince McMahon where he is almost in tears rambling on about Orton feeling pain in his bones for Cena’s father and family. John Cena isn’t an actor. He is a slightly funny, muscle bound wrestler with mid-card ability who can be over when he is taking the piss out of people as a heel rapper. Making him almost cry on television when he can’t act a lick made him look foolish going into a pay per view in my eyes.
3. At Unforgiven after weeks of hype Cena gets himself purposely disqualified, giving the impression that he knew that he could not beat Orton in a fair fight (which one was the babyface again?). Then he pins Orton down so has dad can come and punt him in the head! Round of applause for the role model please. I’m sorry but if you want to give Cena the strap just because kids will buy his t-shirts, dog tags, sweatbands, stupid spinning belts, etc, at least give him a gimmick that kids can look up to. Imagine if a kid in the play ground held a colleague on the floor while his friend (or dad for that matter, that’s even more ludicrous) kicked the kid in the head.
4. The next night on WWE RAW Cena come out parading a new baseball cap (available at the concession stand on the way out and at wweshopzone.com no doubt) and says sorry. Doesn’t really cut the mustard for me if I am being honest. Maybe his new baseball cap should have his new slogan on “an eye for an eye” or “Cena 3:16 says my dad just kicked you in the head”
Sorry to rant on, but I needed to get that off my chest. Personally I am finding WWE RAW in particular to be a struggle to watch, and with all the recent suspensions this is the focus of the show along with Hornswoggle (replacing Kennedy) as Vince’s illegitimate son (I won’t even get started on that trash, I would be here all night). Please save us Y2J.
