Dark age of pro wrestling, WWE here again
Friday, June 13th, 2008We’d like to welcome our latest family member here to pro wrestling’s fastest-growing website — WrestlersRamblings.com — here he is: The Amazin’ Anthony Volastro! How ’bout a big welcome from all our regulars? Take it away, oh, Amazin’ one! - Mr. Mal
With McMahon being so desperate for ratings that he is bribing viewers to watch Raw with his Million dollar giveaway (which personally I could have spent the million bucks buying TV sets , putting them in a warehouse , and jacking up my own ratings - with of course a few bribes to the Nielsen distributors) we have thus official entered another dark age of professional wrestling. Dark ages are commonplace in the wrestling world - the incredible high of the 80’s, the horrific lows of the 90’s, and then the rise again in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. But now with Austin missing, Rock in Hollywood, and everyone else dying off or being shipped to rehab, we are in a new wrestling recession. And just like how economists claim an economic downturn can be good for the economy so to is this new wrestling dark age.
With ratings slipping, McMahon dipping into his own pockets, and stadiums unable to sell-out - McMahon is going to have to pull in the reigns of his horrible booking team and his out of control Son-in-Law, Triple “I will be the champ whenever I want” H. So die hard fans have to accept and let Pro Wrestling fall off the pop culture map for the time being until from the ashes another Steve Austin and Rock will emerge with fresh storylines and attitudes.
This is McMahon at his best: when he is forced to get vicious with competition. However, the problem this time is that McMahon’s competition is himself. He really needs to face facts that its his talent and writers causing his problems, not people’s lack of interest in the WWE. With no competition and no real reasons (until recently) to give top notch programming and writing, Vince has let his guard down. And giving away money is not going to be the fix. Not to mention those who do not watch wrestling will probably feel that the outcome of the money giveaway is as much of a farce as the outcome of matches on the card.
Just as McMahon reinvented WWE to get out of his early 90’s slump by turning from kid/family oriented to R rated material for guys - he needs to do the same now. Perhaps doing something that hasn’t been done in wrestling before - like keeping it exciting, and unexpected, letting crazy things happen like, for instance, a high level of unpredictability
in outcome of matches (just what if someone like Umaga pins Triple H on a fluke thirty seconds into what fans would think is a throw-away match) Whatever McMahon’s solution turns out to be, it means that die hard wrestling fans are going to get some kick ass writing coming their ways so just hang in there because Vince will not go down without a helluva fight. So for now, fans just need to enjoy this new Dark Age of wrestling - with all the experimentation that goes on to entice new viewers you are sure to get some horrible gimmicks and storylines that you will be able to look back on and laugh at (TL Hopper anyone and Jake the Snake being forced to drink booze by Jerry Lawler) and at some point in the future there will be a turn and we will once again get some truly kick-ass entertainment.
