Across the Pond: The Last of the Great ‘Gimmicks’

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Logo for Across The PondSting, Undertaker, Kane, Papa Shango and the Wild Samoans; all these Superstars had, what I considered to be great ‘gimmicks’. Let’s splash around that idea for a while. What really constitutes a great gimmick? First let me clarify what I mean, when I say ‘gimmick’ I’m not referring to the WWE ‘Superstar’ gimmicks, like the personalities of ‘The Rock’, ‘Stone Cold’ or ‘Triple H’; what I’m talking about is a ludicrously absurd gimmick that is so beautifully over the top and outrageous that one would think it has no business garnering any success in Professional Wrestling. While I am in no way neglecting the contributions and success of the characters of the likes of the Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin, each persona was far too close to what could actually be a real person for me to consider a ‘great’ Professional Wrestling gimmick. I suppose when I say a ‘great’ gimmick I should say a ‘different’ or a ‘bizarre’ gimmick; but I digress. What I mean to say is that in today’s wrestling there is really no place left for really outrageous gimmicks. The fans do not react the same way today then they did back in the 80’s and 90’s.
COPYRIGHT WrestlersRamblings.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WWE Superstar Umaga Through out the course of Professional Wrestling history many WCW and WWE Superstars have earned massive amounts of success because their gimmicks were so over the top one could not help but take notice of them. Allow me to examine one such example; Papa Shango. While I respect and admire the former WWE Superstar, when Charles Wright was competing in his ‘Papa Shango’ gimmick he was not the greatest in-ring performer; however (despite what anyone says in hindsight) his persona; his presence was indisputably more then eye-catching. If we consider this in the context of today it is very unlikely we would ever believe that a witch-doctor could take control of the arena lights and curse his opponents with madness and bad luck (Undertaker notwithstanding, and I’ll get back to him later), however when Wright first adopted the gimmick he was more then impressive with it. He was a frightening supernatural monster who would win a match before even entering the ring. Now to take a more modern example of WWEs The Boogeyman there is no question he is similar to the Papa Shango gimmick, however is anyone really afraid of him? My eight year old cousin isn’t and he wouldn’t be the toughest man in Ireland, but when I think back to how I used to watch the old WWF with my uncle, I remember I was petrified of Papa Shango. My uncle didn’t exactly help, but hey that’s life. Now I’m not saying WWF then was better the WWE is now, I’m not saying Charles Wright is a better performer then Marty Wright and I’m not even saying Papa Shango was a better gimmick then The Boogeyman; what I am saying is that the Papa Shango persona was a product of a time when gimmicks like that were not just acceptable but embraced, and The Boogeyman is a product of the new WWF; WWE and thus can not be expected to reach the heights of success attained by the likes of Papa Shango, Kane or the Undertaker.
COPYRIGHT WrestlersRamblings.com and Mr. Mal Occhio ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WWE ECW KaneI do believe however, that over-the-top gimmicks have a long and enduring lifespan. Kamala for example never seems to get old. Although his in ring ability may have deteriorated and he may rarely be on TV, he still gets a good reaction. The fans didn’t get tired of the gimmick; in fact they grew accustomed to it and thus feel connected with it. Through this connection they feel nostalgic whenever he makes his appearance, and so he gets a positive reaction. This is an ever present quality in the enigma that is the Undertaker. Let me start by saying Taker is one of the hardest working men in the business and one of the greatest in ring performers. However his gimmick is so unbelievable it’s actually funny to think about it. I think WWE best parodied it with the early ECW on Sci-Fi show where a wrestler named ‘The Zombie’ appeared to have the seven shades of… umm, you know what, let’s just say it rhymes with ‘kit’, smashed out of him by ECWs own Sandman. Let’s call a spade a spade; let’s call the Undertaker a Zombie, because that’s what his gimmick really and truly is. The idea that the Deadman actually ‘died’ on WWF television and came back to life, it’s entirely implausible. With that being said, he is still the most successful gimmick in the history of the business (bar ECWs Cactus Jack, but WWE kind of killed that, so I’ll let it go). Baring all that in mind what really proves the enduring nature of these classic, crazy, terrible, brilliant gimmicks is the fact that the Undertaker was repackaged as ‘The American Badass’. He became a motorbike riding, ass kicking thug straight out of Houston Texas with destruction on his mind. Now that was a cool, modern gimmick that suits the current structure of WWE, today’s Professional Wrestling. However when the good old Deadman came back, his reaction was bigger then ever. His presence was more impressive then it ever was as the ‘ABA’ and his entrance sent a chill down the collective spines of each and every fan watching.

COPYRIGHT WrestlersRamblings.com and Mr. Mal Occhio WWE Rey Mysterio Undertaker SmackdownThis leads one to believe that a good ‘bizarre’ gimmick should get over and stay over with the fans. This is not the case. Remember the doppelganger Kane? Well now, wasn’t that an angle that would have worked incredibly well 10 years ago? Don’t you all feel the Boogeyman would have worked in the 1980’s? Regardless, I don’t believe gimmicks like these will get over like they used to; there are exceptions such as Umaga and Big Daddy V. However for every Umaga there will be six Snitsky’s. ECWs Kevin Thorn has already lost his originality and it’s only a matter of time until we see all WWE Superstars becoming generic automations. Which lead me to my closing statement; I believe the days of the ‘great’ gimmicks are coming to an end. So now I raise my glass and ask you to join me in a toast to Abyss, to Judas Mesias, Undertaker, Kane, to Umaga and every other ‘monster’ who is ‘over’ with the fans. Here’s to the last of the great gimmicks, thanks for the memories.
Right so; that’s about it really. Sorry it took me so long to get this column up; I hope you enjoyed my opinions from across the pond.   Lex Luger, Tito Ortiz…Happy Holidays!Hey Guys…I would like to wish everyone the Healthiest and Happiest of Holidays… Merry Christmakawanika… I hope I covered everyone with that DDP holiday word… If you know me you know that this time of the year that is without question my favorite time of the year for many reasons… The most important reason is just because people are just nicer to people this time of year which is always a good thing… we tend to give more … care more … do more… but it’s funny because no matter how good we all have it or how good we feel about ourselves we all tend to take things for granted … Lex Lugar posewe take for granted the simplest things like going to the bathroom by ourselves… tying our own shoes and even breathing… breathing right… we do it every day and we totally take it for granted … we never think about how important it really is until we run out of air… and then… well it seems pretty damn important doesn’t it… the quickest way you can appreciate where you are no matter what our state of affairs are is to live life with Attitude of Gratitude… or something I call Living Life @ 90%… I’m speaking from personal experience because I was just reminded just how good I really have it when I went to see my buddy Lex Luger aka Larry Pfohl this week…..When I started my journey through the wacky wonderful world of professional wrestling… starting from the bottom making no money there were many guys I looked up to for many reasons… Dusty Rhodes “The American Dream”, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, and Jesse “The Body” Ventura just to name a few… I also looked up to a guy named Lex Luger… From what I observed Lex was really the Total Package but he wasn’t just a jock with the perfect body he was also highly intelligent and was the complete business man who just happened to wrestle for a living… wrestling and his body was a business to him… He went from playing Pro football making great deal of money right into Pro-wrestling and was an instant star making HUGE money his entire career… he didn’t just make money and spend it… he made money and invested it … he owned land and built business’s… he lived in a 2 million dollar home on a golf course with his beautiful family … he was a truly a star who had it all…..

And then came the fall of the Roman Empire… Lex Luger the man who had everything came crashing down… today Lex has no home … no cars… no land no money… no perfect body… today Lex is paralyzed and resides at spinal rehab center … I’m not going to get into what brought Lex crashing down because that is not my story to tell… it’s his… The reason I bring all this up at this time is because I just went to visit Lex and I have to tell he is a still a Warrior… Lex reminded me that we all must live life with an Attitude of Gratitude… not by preaching to me but by living it … Lex leads by example… he is one of the most positive people on this planet right now and he blames no one for what has happened to him… he knows much of what has happened has to do with the decisions that he has made through out his life… Lex is at peace with himself and I’m not talking about that crazy at peace… I’m talking real at peace … with himself and with God… He’s living with the mindset that everything happens for a reason and this for the moment this is his chosen path… He leads by example…I too believe that everything happens for a reason and we get to choose weather it’s going to be a good reason or aLex lugar bad reason… about 6 weeks ago I was booked on wrestling show in San Francisco… the show was a poorly promoted bust and most of the boys never got paid… the only positive thing that happen as a result of me being booked at that show was that I was there when Lex needed me… I heard he was in trouble and I ran down to his room… at the time I had no idea what was happening to Lex … I thought it might have been a mild stroke like what Kevin Nash had… Lex had no idea what was happening to him and the paramedics had no idea either. But they did know they needed to get him to the hospital… NOW… so I helped my buddy helped my onto the gurney and off he went… that was the first time I had seen Lex in years… the doctors ran 100’s of test on Lex and couldn’t find anything… weeks later they still have no idea why Lex is paralyzed… the positive side is Lex is regaining movement back in his body and he hopes and prays that someday he will walk again and I believe if there is anyone out there that can do it … it is Lex… I am writing this in my email this week because I was truly moved emotionally by Lex and I get so many questions all the time about Lex on my myspace and at my website a and I wanted to give you all an update but I also wanted you to give you all a chance to send Lex a Get Well card or a Christmas card and let him know you are in your thoughts and prayers… if you would like to send Lex a card please send it to:

Former WWE Star son dies, return of column and more

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Pro Wrestling PipelineLots of news going down around the wrestling world these days. Sit back and relax and let the let The Eagle bring you up to date…..Former TNA /WWE/WCW Star Scott Hall has decided to finally appear at an event. Hall appeared at Insane Clown Posse’s Juggalo Championship Wrestling. This is his first appearance since no showing TNA’s Turning Point PPV. He called TNA that day and said he had food poisoning but later it was said he was suffering from severe depression. Either way he is a professional who has been in the business a long time, there is no excuse. Even after Turning Point he no showed a couple events for Carlos Colon’s WWC Promotion out of Puerto Rico……Both TNA Stars Senshi and Ron “The Truth” Killings opted to leave TNA at a meeting a while back. Killings is done and some in WWE are pushing for him to come there. Senshi will most likely be done at Final Resolution. He is being a professional and putting over some guys on his way out…..As of right now former ECW Champion and current ECW announcer Tazz will be taken JBL’s place at the announce table for SmackDown. WWE has interviewed several people so this will not be a long term situation…..The Eagle’s Catch and Release Column will be back this week. Look for it tomorrow in its regular slot on Monday afternoons.

On a somber note it was announced that on Wednesday December 19th Mike Polchlopek III, son of former WWE Superstar Mike Barton aka Bart Gunn has passed away. Apparently a friend of his was cleaning a .22 caliber gun and it accidently went off striking Polchlopek in the head. He was only 18 years old. Police are investigating and The Eagle will keep you up to date. Everyone here at www.wrestlersramblings.com would like to send out deepest sympathy to the family.
