Dark age of pro wrestling, WWE here again

Friday, June 13th, 2008

We’d like to welcome our latest family member here to pro wrestling’s fastest-growing website — WrestlersRamblings.com — here he is: The Amazin’ Anthony Volastro! How ’bout a big welcome from all our regulars? Take it away, oh, Amazin’ one! - Mr. Mal

With McMahon being so desperate for ratings that he is bribing viewers to watch Raw with his Million dollar giveaway (which personally I could have spent the million bucks buying TV sets , putting them in a warehouse , and jacking up my own ratings - with of course a few bribes to the Nielsen distributors) we have thus official entered another dark age of professional wrestling. Dark ages are commonplace in the wrestling world - the incredible high of the 80’s, the horrific lows of the 90’s, and then the rise again in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. But now with Austin missing, Rock in Hollywood, and everyone else dying off or being shipped to rehab, we are in a new wrestling recession. And just like how economists claim an economic downturn can be good for the economy so to is this new wrestling dark age.

With ratings slipping, McMahon dipping into his own pockets, and stadiums unable to sell-out - McMahon is going to have to pull in the reigns of his horrible booking team and his out of control Son-in-Law, Triple “I will be the champ whenever I want” H. So die hard fans have to accept and let Pro Wrestling fall off the pop culture map for the time being until from the ashes another Steve Austin and Rock will emerge with fresh storylines and attitudes.

This is McMahon at his best: when he is forced to get vicious with competition. However, the problem this time is that McMahon’s competition is himself. He really needs to face facts that its his talent and writers causing his problems, not people’s lack of interest in the WWE. With no competition and no real reasons (until recently) to give top notch programming and writing, Vince has let his guard down. And giving away money is not going to be the fix. Not to mention those who do not watch wrestling will probably feel that the outcome of the money giveaway is as much of a farce as the outcome of matches on the card.

Just as McMahon reinvented WWE to get out of his early 90’s slump by turning from kid/family oriented to R rated material for guys - he needs to do the same now. Perhaps doing something that hasn’t been done in wrestling before - like keeping it exciting, and unexpected, letting crazy things happen like, for instance, a high level of unpredictability
in outcome of matches (just what if someone like Umaga pins Triple H on a fluke thirty seconds into what fans would think is a throw-away match) Whatever McMahon’s solution turns out to be, it means that die hard wrestling fans are going to get some kick ass writing coming their ways so just hang in there because Vince will not go down without a helluva fight. So for now, fans just need to enjoy this new Dark Age of wrestling - with all the experimentation that goes on to entice new viewers you are sure to get some horrible gimmicks and storylines that you will be able to look back on and laugh at (TL Hopper anyone and Jake the Snake being forced to drink booze by Jerry Lawler) and at some point in the future there will be a turn and we will once again get some truly kick-ass entertainment.

TNA admits secondary status by hiring WWE legends

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

WrestlersRamblings.com COPYRIGHT Mr. Mal Occhio — Jake the Snake Roberts WWF WWE TNADon’t get Mr. Mal wrong, I’m as big of a WWF, yellow-finger era fan as anyone who ever grew up in that era — but does TNA really get any sort of rub from signing a handful of WWE Legends for this Sunday’s Slammiversary PPV? Granted, Kamala, Koko B. Ware, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and George “The Animal” Steele are all fan favorites. No doubt the pop will be good in the arena, and well-deserved for that matter. To varying degrees, these four pro wrestlers defined the eras in which they formerly appeared. But those eras are not this era, and more importantly, their arena was not that of TNA.

For an organization eager to establish its own identity such as TNA, why do they continually look to plum the scraps of the WWE in hiring both current day cast-offs and yesteryear’s WWF Superstars? Immediately, people don’t think: “Man! This TNA is awesome!” Instead, the thought comes to mind that, “Man! The WWE sure used to be fun” rings more appropriate. TNA needs to continue to strive to be the anti-WWE. Forget hiring former WWF cartoon heroes to supposedly pump-up PPV buyrates — Mr. Mal dares to say this won’t increase sales by much (who would actually buy a PPV just to see a guest spot??). Concentrate on building your own stars, in your own fashion, your own way. Then again, when the angle these men are set to appear in is taken directly from the 90s WWF, I suppose that’s too much to expect. Sadly, pale imitation is just par for the course for TNA.

Abysmal Guerrero-Edge angle a new low for WWE?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

More damage control by Vince McMahon and the WWE, this time (reportedly) during a stockholders meeting, where someone complained about the Vickie Guerrero-Edge storyline — and more specifically — how far it was going to go. While McMahon may have tipped his hand about the nearing end to the angle (allegedly chiming in with something along the lines of, while currently a love and relationship angle, it may not end up that way) is there anyone out there who actually thinks this was a good angle to begin with? Does anyone believe — even in the make-believe world of the WWE and pro wrestling — that Vickie and Edge would ever end up together?

Further than that, exploiting Vickie Guerrero for the sake of her last name (and let’s face facts, that’s why she has a job — as it sure ain’t for her acting talent) is bordering on downright immoral. Vince McMahon should have cut Vickie a cheque and allowed her to live her life without her late husband Eddie in peace. Make no mistake that Eddie was one of Mr. Mal’s all-time favorites. Seeing his widow embarass herself on TV each week is nothing more than the WWE’s attempt at ringing every last ounce out of the Guerrero name. We all have heard that Eddie was in deep debt, one no doubt now passed on to his young family, but have Vickie have to “earn” her keep following his death was just flat-out wrong. I don’t want to hear how she enjoys it. I don’t want to hear how it may have been her idea — because frankly, I don’t buy it for a second. Ending this storyline once and for all can only be a positive step toward restoring some dignity to the Guerrero name and all the WWE. Imagine that. Dignity and the WWE in the same sentence.
