WWE RAW: Y2J, HHH provide respite from tedium

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Welcome everyone to the new Sensation! With yours truly the Sensational1 as your host. This is my Raw review, so buckle up and lets get started. This isn’t your everyday recap, the Sensational1’s here to give you a little Raw Sensation.Right off the bat John Cena comes out and gives a speech on how everyone will remember the moment at Night of Champions when he will be able to say “The champ is here.” He even said it would be as memorable as when the boyhood dream finally became a reality. I think Cena needs a reality check. Anyway, HHH comes out and criticizes Cena’s wrestling, (please no cracks about the pot calling the kettle black.) Cena fires back that he made HHH tap. Triple H says a lot has transpired since they last met one on one, two years ago. Cena says nothing at all is different, they were the main event then, and two years later the world still wants to see them go at it. And, the award for most delusional comment of the night goes to John Cena.

Vince McMahon, makes sure they don’t break into a brawl before Night of Champions, and pits Cena vs. Umaga in a street fight. This match might have held a little more allure if Umaga had any credibility left in my eyes at all. The two fought back and forth, with Umaga controlling most of the bout. Cena lifted Umaga for a FU, but was unable to complete the move, when his knee buckled. Just when it seemed it was all over, Dum-Dadada!!! Super Cena pulls it off again, Woo!!

This week saw Mr. McMahon give away another million dollars. One man won 300,000, and a lucky lady won a whopping $16. Next week we all have another chance to win, as Million dollar-mania continues. Sign up at WWE.com.

Jeff Hardy picked up a victory against the bad apple Carlito. Unlike Carlito, Hardy has received a relatively good push since returning, but I’d like to see these two involved in a serious feud, not necessarily with each other, but they can both definitely use a decent angle.

Paul and Katie lee Burchill, took on Mr. Kennedy and Mickie James in an inter-gender match. Katie pinned Mickie to gain the victory for her team. This was the second time she pins the women’s champ.

Chris Jericho came out to call out HBK. To everyone’s surprise, it was The nature boy who answered the call, challenging Y2J to a fight in the parking-lot. It wasn’t to be however, as Vince had him escorted out, but the game stepped up, and a match was made .

The Divas turned out for a bikini contest, hosted by the ever exciting Charlie Haas. Jillian tried to show off her singing talent, gaining her a chorus of boos. The crowd favorite, and winner was Maria.

The tag champs were able to shake off the funk they’ve been in, by scoring a win over Cryme tyme. Ted Dibiase watched at ringside. I don’t know about you, but the Sensational1 hopes Mr. “I’m simply priceless” isn’t handed the belts too soon, because he’s “simply not ready.” Especially if his partner is the equally inexperienced D.H Smith, as some are speculating. It’s a good idea to put these two together, maybe form a faction with other second generation superstars like Carlito, or even Cody Rhodes. It’s not a good idea to push them too hard too fast.

Finally, the main event. Champion vs. champion, and would you believe it I’m actually excited to watch! There was a believability about these two wanting to square off. A chemistry, or animosity that makes fans want to watch, something I don’t see between Cena and HHH. Plus, unlike Cena Y2J is a heal, which gives fans someone to hate for the right reasons. This was a very good match, the two brawled, and threw one another against whatever was at hand. Jericho took a hard shot to the shoulder that sent him sailing to the outside, but things went back and forth for the duration of the match. It ended in a no contest after Lance Cade inexplicably attacked Triple H. Y2J and Cade continued their assault after the bell, but Dum-Dadada! It’s Super Cena to the rescue! Unfortunately for him HHH showed him why nice guys finish last as he attacked his rescuer. Y2J and Cade came back in to take advantage of the situation.

Jericho dropped the game with a code breaker, and he and his new running mate celebrated in the ring. Now that I think about it they could make a excellent tag team, Lord knows someone has to breathe new life into that division. I’m looking forward to seeing these four compete next week, I suspect it’ll be something like Cade and Y2J vs. Cena and HHH, but that’s okay because Y2J is turning into a real heal the kind you love to hate. And at least this weeks main event was unexpected, and fresh. Next week all the superstars from every brand will be at Raw for the draft, with any luck the creative team will use the access pool of talent and provide the fans with a product wrestling fans can be proud of. Until next time this is yours truly the Sensational1, urging you to keep tuning in to this site. After all, you never know when something sensational might happen.

WWE RAW deservedly hits 10-year low

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

News that the 5/26 edition of WWE RAW scored a pathetic 2.9 cable rating (its lowest since a 12/15/97 show) has to serve as a real wake-up call to the powers that be in the WWE. Even Mr. Mal cannot be bothered to watch the tripe the WWE serves up these days. Will this “Million Dollar Giveaway” be enough to lure fans? Highly doubtful, although it does smack of desperation. For far too long, Vince McMahon has ignored his core market in an effort to expand his boundaries and bring pro wrestling into areas it was never meant to be — namely, the mainstream. He is now paying for this misdirection. Longtime fans are completely apathetic to his product and he has no one to blame but himself. Mr. Mal is glad to hear that pushing the Great Khali means big business over in India. Great. But it means the clicking of TV to the “off” position here in North America.

I’m not even baggin’ on Khali, either. It’s just . . . everything, really. No tag teams, no managers (why the hell was Armando Alejandro Estrada taken away from Umaga?!? He’s wasting away on ECW) and no long-term feuds with any significance whatsoever. Add in too many PPVs where fans are expected to pay for matches they have already seen — including the unholiest of unholy matches that should NEVER again see the light of day: Triple Threat Matches — and its actually encouraging to see WWE RAW post such lowly numbers. It means the public aren’t the witless marks the WWE believes us to be.

“Big” WWE changes not big enough, says Mr. Mal

Monday, May 26th, 2008

So, the WWE has let in leak that “big” changes are on the way . . . when in actuality, it sounds like much ado about nothing according to reports. Apparently, the moving of the ECW tapings to Monday nights (following RAW) is supposed to be a change for the better, and is being looked upon as a means of energizing the stale roster. Here’s a hint, Vince McMahon — no one will care one way or the other. Longtime fans are completely turned off by your stale product, and moving ECW to Mondays is cosmetic and nothing else.

Try removing HHH from the RAW title picture and you may actually give fans something different for a change. How about new sets for RAW and Smackdown, maybe with a new color scheme? What about doing something different that actually generates some discussion among casual fans, capturing their interest and gaining some new viewers? Nah. Let’s move ECW to Mondays, even though the show will still not air until Tuesday in the U.S. and Fridays in Canada. Yep. That’ll work. Excuse me while Mr. Mal fluffs his pillow. I have some sleep to get caught up on. All this excitement is making me sleepy . . .
