FLASH! Congress calls TNA, NWA out for drug-testing records
The United States Congressional investigation into the world of professional wrestling has grown beyond the WWE — smack dab into the lap of TNA. In an extension of the current ongoing Federal investigation — spearheaded by Congressmen Cliff Steams and Bobby Rush – into World Wrestling Entertainment’s Wellness Program (in the wake of the Chris Benoit tragedy in June) it is now being reported that Total Non-Stop Action has been asked to turn over their drug-testing records for inspection. Further, the order has also been issued to the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) as well, a governing body for a collection of small, independant promotions. A deadline of August 28th for turnover of all information has likewise been levied.
According to a press release from the official United States House of Representatives, Stearns is quoted as saying, “After I called for a congressional hearings on the use of steroids and other drugs in professional wrestling, I have heard from wrestlers that steroids, pain killers, and other drugs are used frequently in the industry. Trafficking in steroids and other drugs is a felony and their use without a prescription is also a crime. In addition to ensuring that our laws are respected, Congress has a responsibility to protect young people from the harmful impact of drug use in pro wrestling. Some 1 million children under the age of 11 watch pro wrestling and many emulate the wrestlers they see.”
The forementioned organizations have been asked to outline their drug-testing policies and efforts taken to detect and prevent steroid usage and other drugs. A hearing is expected to be held in the fall — led by Stearns and Rush — following all the recent deaths in the industry, the most-recent being Brian Adams only this week, formerly known in the WWE/WCW as Crush.
