Grab your coffee, pour something surgary in a bowl and pull-up your favorite easy chair - we’re about to begin our premiere installment of OLD-SCHOOL SUNDAYS, exclusively here on WrestlersRamblings.com! Rest assured that, while Mr. Mal’s wrestling tastes usually run more toward the technical (think Bret or Owen Hart); high-flying (Rey Mysterio or Hayabusa) or even outright violent (Abudallah the Butcher or Terry Funk) this week’s we we will kick-off this new regular segment with a taste of the sheer absurd: KAMALA versus DOINK THE CLOWN. Professional wrestling at its finest is pure escapism unlike anything else in the world. And after the week we all have lived through as fans, Mr. Mal thinks this heapin’ helpin’ of escapism is just the ticket we all need to soothe our weary wrasslin’ souls.
Several things to keep your own evil eye peeled for during this bout: For one, it features a face Kamala, managed by a face Slick. At this point in his career, Kamala had already main-evented programs with such legends as Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan (not to mention other notable feuds against stars such as Jake the Snake Roberts) so, in the eyes of Vince McMahon - what else can you do with a blood-thirsty, African cannibal but turn him face, of course!! After all, everyone loves a friendly cannibal, right!! Classic stuff, including the clip that preceded the match with the late Lord Alfred Hayes and Slick trying to teach Kamala to bowl. Yes, you read that right. See for yourself.
Kamala’s opponent in this match is the Matt Bourne-portrayed Doink. Again, this is another rarity, in that it shows the heel Doink - just as the character was originally designed. This gimmick really could have been something (in Mr. Mal’s eyes - love that creepy music!) but, as is often the case, “personal demons” plagued Borne throughout his career, and the character eventually was played by a number of different workers, among them Steve Lombardi and Steve Keirn (albeit in bland, ultra-babyface portrayals). Of note, Bourne was part of the historic first WrestleMania, putting over Ricky Steamboat in Madison Square Garden. He later went on to play Big Josh in WCW while also working other territories, simply as “Maniac” Matt Bourne.
Tell Lou Thesz to start rollin’ in his grave, because this premiere installment of OLD-SCHOOL SUNDAYS is about to begin with nary a wristlock to be found! Your commentators are Jim Ross, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Randy “Macho Man” Savage. Pay close attention to the end of the match: Mr. Mal guarantees you have NEVER seen a match end like this, and most likely, never will again. Enjoy!
