Old-School Sundays: Superstar Billy Graham
In the wake of the Signature Pharmacy fallout this week, Mr. Mal’s gotta admit that he, unfortunately, has steroids on the mind when it comes to pro wrestling, even when considering the latest edition of Old-School Sundays. It’s a shame, yes, but — hey — it ain’t like this is a new thang, gang (as if ya didn’t know). Take our feature attraction for today — Superstar Billy Graham. He admitted to first taking them back way back in 1965, having to get a new liver eventually as a result, and – in fact – damn near dying as a result of these dangerous hormonal supplements. Not that anyone learned from it. Heck, Graham even admitted in his autobiography that his steroid use rendered him sterile. Yikes. If all that don’t scare ya, nothing will. As long as there is pro wrestling with no off-season and no disabled list with pay, wrestlers will always look for ways to get stay working, not to mention get bigger, faster, stronger and better than before. And to do that? Shortcuts will always be taken. If not steroids, it will be something else — human growth hormone for example. That can only be found by blood test. Sad, but true. But enough about performance-enhancing drugs, steroids, painkillers and what not. We’re talking pro wrestling, right? Let’s get back to where the magic happens, quickly please, inside the ring.
Enjoy two WWF World Champions from the past, Superstar Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino, going at it old-school style, with Mr. Mal seriously needing a good dose of Old-School pro wrestling this morning to wash some of this latest bad taste from my mouth. Superstar Billy Graham, despite his notorious side, not only held world championship gold around his waist, but was also influential on the careers of dozens of pro wrestlers to come after him — not the least of which was Hulk Hogan. Graham, known just as much for his terrific mic skills as his powerful biceps and physique, is now a WWE Hall of Famer. One of his most-famous feuds was with “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, a sample of which (in interview form) is also here for your enjoyment, along with another mic spot in Florida, during Graham’s karate-style phase. Listen for a young Vince McMahon on the play-by-play in the WWWF World Championship match. Great stuff. Peronally, Mr. Mal always liked Vinnie Mac behind the mic. Thanks for stopping by. See ya’ll again real soon.
