REVIEW: WWE Summerslam sees shocks and surprises

The sun may have set on yet another SummerSlam , but not before a ton of surprises on last night’s WWE PPV. Neither Mr. Mal or The Eagle look like they will be able to retire following their pre-event picks (and lack of success therein) but, nonetheless, here are your results and thoughts from two of WrestlersRamblings.com staff members. Correct responses are tabulated after each synopsis.

WWE Summerslam 2007 results

Kane defeated Finlay

EAGLE - Kane had his ribs taped up, playing off the injury he suffered 3 weeks ago. Hornswoggle did make an appearance but it wasn’t a comedy skit that we were expecting. These two men know how to fight and I look forward to seeing them go at it again. (1)

MR. MAL - Honestly, I was still waiting for my friends to arrive at the bar, and Mr. Mal only saw bits and pieces of this match, sorry. Kane getting the win was a surprise. (0)

COPYRIGHT WrestlersRamblings.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WWE Superstar UmagaUmaga retained WWE Intercontinental over Kennedy & Carlito

EAGLE - I am very surprised they didn’t give Kennedy the title. He certainly deserves another run with some type of gold. Umaga even got the win by using the spike on Kennedy which surprised me. This was a quick match considering it was a triple threat and for the title. I am not disappointed with the result because Umaga is a force and they aren’t given him the big title. (1)

MR. MAL - Umaga is a beast. Him getting the win, clean, on his spike-finisher was a great ending. He looks extremely strong and, in the process, it also costs Kennedy very little in losing. (0)

Rey Mysterio defeated Chavo Guerrero

EAGLE - Chavo went right after Rey’s leg as expected. This is a great feud. Even with Rey winning the feud can continue and even steal the show. These two work well together and Chavo is on a roll as of late. There was no other way to end this. (2)

MR. MAL - What was up with Mysterio wearing that silver makeup over his whole body? Odd. Mr. Mal’s a big Rey fan — and seeing him return from his latest knee surgery was great — but that outfit was just . . .  odd. It’s not like they had a promotional tie-in with The Silver Surfer flick or something. Anyway, the match was great, as expected, and Rey looks back and as nimble as ever. (0)

Beth Phoenix won the WWE Divas Battle Royal

EAGLE - This was a great pick to win the battle royal. The word going around is that she did very well in the developmental territory. The future match between her and Candace Michelle should be a great match. Finally there is some interest in the Diva division. (3)

MR. MAL - Hey! I got one right!! Hurray for us! Good move by the WWE to bring yet another female into the ranks of legitimate challengers for their Women’s World Title. Beth is massive, but not quite Chyna proportions. She could do well. (1)

Beer drinking challenge… Matt Hardy vs MVP

EAGLE - This was an added treat. MVP issued the challenge earlier in the night. Of course when he came out he stated that he would “lower himselfâ€? to the fans standards by drinking beer. When Hardy appeared he said he loved being able to relate to the common person. Hardy said because MVP got a replacement for the boxing challenge he is allowed to have one for tonight. That’s when the glass broke and Stone Cold Steve Austin appeared. Before drinking a beer with Matt Hardy he gave MVP the stunner. WWE is really trying to promote Austin’s “The Condemnded” DVD release because it flopped in the theaters. A good segment added to the PPV.

MR. MAL - I gotta side with my boy The Professional on this one: does anyone really care if we ever see Stone Cold drink one more beer and/or give out another sloppy stunner? MVP sell following the move made it worthwhile, but — seriously, WWE fans — is Mr. Mal off on this one? Don’tcha just wish Austin would just go away? I wish he could still work, but he can’t. So get off of my PPV already. At least I watched it, The Professional got up and went outside for a smoke.

John Morrison defeated CM Punk to retain the ECW Championship

EAGLE - This was one that surprised me. I know that this feud brings interest to the ECW brand but its time to put the title on Punk. He deserves it and it would set up other great feuds with Burke or even Kevin Thorne. This match had a lot of action but it seemed rushed. (3)

MR. MAL - My co-match of the night. Quickly-paced with both men getting in some nice work. The ending simply allows Punk to chase the title so more. It’s good for business, in Mr. Mal’s opinion. Morrison needs the title more at this stage than Punk, who is WAY over regardless of having the strap. (2)

Triple H defeated King Booker

EAGLE - According to a WWE.com poll this was the most anticipated match of the night and boy did the fans show it.  As expected The Game dominated King Booker. I am very interested to see where Booker’s character goes now. I know some of the plans down the road for Triple H (but I am keeping them in my hidden vault for now) but as you will see later I am very confused in what direction WWE is going. I am assuming that this feud will continue going into Unforgiven. (4)

MR. MAL - It was great to see HHH return (he looked great, and he also looked amped to return. That’s a lot of rehab and HHH looked happy to be back) but to simply give him a clean win right outta the chute over Booker doesn’t serve any purpose in Mr. Mal’s eyes, except of course to stroke HHH’s ego. Next match, please. (3)

WWE TNA British professional wrestling news photos blog Great KhaliBatista defeated The Great Khali via DQ

EAGLE - I didn’t like this match to begin with and to have it end like this makes no sense. If you are going to build Khali up as a monster then have him defeat the Animal of the WWE fair and square. In my opinion they have hurt the WWE World Title so much in the last months. To have Khali’s manager purposely throw in a chair to get the DQ shows that they have no confidence in the champ. (4)

MR. MAL - A nice surprise in that Batista didn’t walk out with the title again. He doesn’t deserve it, frankly. At least Khali is a huge presence in there, and the claw has added a nice, old-school touch of invincibility to his character. My bet is a returning Undertaker will eventually go over him for the strap. (3)

John Cena defeated Randy Orton to retain the WWE Championship

EAGLE - This is the one that surprises me the most. I really thought Orton would go over and that would set up a Triple H/Orton match at Unforgiven. The only thing I can think is that WWE is pushing the length of Cena’s  reign. The fans booed Cena at first but wouldn’t cheer Orton. I guess they were confused. Later in the match they did start a “Lets go Cena chant which made no sense. Hopefully WWE will figure out what they are doing soon. (4)

MR. MAL - A head-scratcher to be sure, but I’m not against the move. I like John Cena and really cannot understand why so many people hate him. He’s limited in-ring, sure, but that didn’t stop people from rooting for any number of guys in the past. Regardless, Orton’s time will come. My guess is that HHH-Orton will be looked at towards next years Wrestlemania 24. (3)
