Shamrock headed back to pro wrestling and WWE?
According to reports, president Dana White has confirmed that former WWE Superstar Ken Shamrock has been released from UFC. Shamrock, who had one more fight remaining on a UFC deal, simply could not compete at the UFC level anymore, said White. The UFC Hall-of-Famer has also recently begun to coach in the rival IFL, leading to speculation that perhaps the arrangement has created a conflict of interest in White’s eyes. The news of Shamrock’s release flies in the face of a recent interview with NBCSports.com, where Shamrock felt — despite three losses to Tito Ortiz — he still had more to give the sport. “(The) time will come when fans don’t want to watch me any longer and my body can’t get ready to be at the top level. That hasn’t happened in either case.”
While considered aged in terms of competitive mixed martial arts, Shamrock would still make for an attractive possible resigning to the WWE - especially in light of the spate of injuries they are currently experiencing, not to mention the recent Chris Benoit incident. Adding more credence to the possibility of Shamrock coming back to pro wrestling is the fact that not only has he stated that working for IFL motivated by money — “I have seven children, two grandchildren. I have to make a living. The UFC didn’t offer me any fights and the IFL came along and offered me a job. That’s why I’m here, I make my living in the fight game,” — but he has even considered the possibility of fighting his own brother for a buck: “I’m a fighter. I’ll fight anybody.”
Expect rumors of World Wrestling Entertainment pursuing Shamrock to intensify, as a 43-year-old Shamrock would surely still have much to offer the world of sports entertainment. Long before Kurt Angle, Shamrock proved to be a quick study in the squared circle — so much so that, to Angle’s admittance –several of his in-ring techniques and psychology were aped by the former gold medal winner. And more than that — isn’t sports entertainment a better option than fighting your own brother? Money talks, Ken. Maybe even TNA could get in on the negotiating, what with their lesser schedule and travel. Either way, stay tuned . . .
