SmackDown Review: CM Punk vs Edge
Folks just two days before the Royal Rumble it was time for the SmackDown Superstars to step up their game. Read on and you tell The Eagle if they succeeded……The night started off with Rey Mysterio taken on the EdgeHeads Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder. The general idea was to wear out Mysterio before he challenges Edge for the World’s Title. I don’t know if Rey was selling but towards the end of the match he did grab his leg that he recently had surgery on. The match ended with a DQ on The EdgeHeads given Rey the momentum heading into the Royal Rumble. The Eagle does not see Rey Mysterio walking out of Sunday with the title but I will explain that later with my Royal Rumble picks.….Jimmy Wang Yang took on Domino in singles action this week. Shannon Moore and Deuce were at ring side for their partners. When Deuce tried to interfere but Moore stopped that and gave Yang the advantage he needed to get the pin. Shannon Moore and Jimmy Wang Yang are looking good and The Eagle wouldn’t be surprised to see them hold the WWE Tag Titles real soon.….Jamie Noble and Chuck Palumbo teamed up with Michelle McCool to take on the WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz, John Morrison and Layla in a six person tag match. It looks like the Palumbo heel turn has finally happened. Michelle got knocked out of the ring and when Noble was checking on her Palumbo attacked him from behind and continued to beat down on him. Folks Palumbo has finally snapped. I hope WWE has better plans for this feud and turn because up until now it has been boring. The one thing The Eagle has to complain about is the fact that they let Chuck Palumbo lay his hands on Michelle McCool. I said it before… certain storylines don’t belong in wrestling.
The United States Champion MVP came out to discuss his run with The Nature Boy Ric Flair last week. He talked about how he is the future and how he will retire Flair this Sunday at the Royal Rumble. Ric Flair couldn’t let it go …. So he came out to confront MVP once again. Flair kept it simple by saying he is not ready to retire and he will beat MVP this Sunday.…..Finley took on The Great Khali in a Belfast Brawl. In case you don’t know…. A Belfast Brawl is simply a No DQ match but with a fancy name.
I guess you have to be Irish to have that name. Personally, The Eagle thinks Finley can be doing better things than fighting Khali. Finley is talented and could be in a US Title hunt. This feud is a step down from his battles with Rey Mysterio. This match didn’t even end with a winner. Khali attacked Hornswoggle and Finley went nuts and beat down Khali. He didn’t even pin him. Now, The Eagle is confused… wasn’t someone supposed to win this match?….Batista came out to warn all the competitors in the Royal Rumble this Sunday that he is fired up. He also wished Rey Mysterio good luck in his match against the World’s Champion Edge. The Eagle is still looking over the Royal Rumble picks and trying to determine how this is gonna play out.….The Undertaker took on Big Daddy V this week. The Eagle kinda feels like Big V’s character is at a stand still. Yeah, he comes out week after week and beats someone up but he isn’t in a solid feud. At one point he was going after the
ECW Title but now that has changed. The Undertaker got the victory and the momentum heading into this Sunday’s PPV. The Triangle Choke The Deadman used to get the victory was totally awesome.….CM Punk tried to get some revenge this week against the World’s Champion Edge after he cost him the ECW Title on Tuesday. The EdgeHeads came to the ring with Edge but Rey Mysterio came to ringside to support CM Punk. This was a back and forth match. There was a spot where Punk slipped off the top rope…. But the guys improvised very well. Edge hit the spear out of no where to get the win. This was without a doubt one of the best matches The Eagle has seen in a while.
Jan 25th Results
Rey Mysterio def. Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder (Disqualification)
Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore def. Deuce and Domino
The Miz, John Morrison & Layla vs. Chuck Palumbo, Jamie Noble & Michelle McCool (No contest)
Finlay vs. The Great Kahli (No contest)
Undertaker def. Big Daddy V
World Heavyweight Champion Edge def. CM Punk
The Eagle’s Grade A-
It was a good show. The ending match sure made the show worth while. What hurt this weeks show was the ending of the Finley/Khali match or lack of ending and Palumbo laying his hands on Michelle McCool. Other than that everything else was good and it had a decent build up heading into the Royal Rumble.
