WrestleWombat #2: Get smart or die in TNA
A few years ago TWC (The Wrestling Channel) started on SKY, the one thing I remember vividly was AJ Styles coming off the top rope with a Spinal Tap and winning the NWA Championship. It stuck in my mind, it made me watch TNA. AJ Styles was awesome, he was the height of a WWE superstar with the ability to be a powerful and yet agile cruiserweight. I was being exposed all the time on TWC to this breed of wrestling. I am ashamed to say that I am no longer a fan of AJ Styles.
I know you all hate discussing TNA but I recently ended up on the wrong end of an argument with someone about it, and felt I needed to say something. My problem with AJ Styles goes all the way back to Samoa Joe’s arrival in the company, Samoa Joe was promised by the WWE a developmental contract, in other words he would spend a year learning how to wrestle WWE style before being given a character and a storyline for a year. TNA was offering Joe a creatively open contract with a start immediately.
Joe went to TNA, and Umaga was born on WWE Television the night after Wrestlemania. Joe’s contract conditions were that he was to remain undefeated for a year to give him the push towards the World Title. During this time, we all know Joe feuded with Daniels and Styles and established himself in the company. This is not the reason that I hate Styles, the reason arrived around the time Joe was scheduled to be pushed for the title. When Kurt Angle walked in to the picture, and basically kicked Joe aside. As a result Joe is now mid card fodder with no title opportunity in sight.
Kurt Angle is my reason for hating AJ Styles. And this is why… AJ Styles in currently in a contention with Kurt Angle for the TNA Title. After becoming a mockery when he married Angle’s wife, and (in the words of Don “Channel 23” West) “has seduced her with his boyish charm”. This week on Impact AJ and Karen are apparently going to shock the world. I can tell everyone now this is no bombshell, I would happily put money on the fact that AJ and Karen are going to announce that Karen is pregnant.
And this story goes in one direction, AJ gets a few one ups against Angle, until it comes to a pay per view… not Lockdown, but after that. When its AJ and Angle for the title and Karen reveals her true alignment and betrays AJ revealing it was their plan all along from the start. AJ switches back to being a face and will get one more loss at the title before the baton is picked up by either Steiner or Booker T.
I have no idea what in the world is possessing AJ Styles to stay in TNA. When you think of TNA three names jump into my mind: Styles, Daniels and Sabin… where are these men now? Sabin is stuck feuding with Team 3D who are being wasted away by Russo and Carter, Daniels dropped out of the company as his main character because he felt he was not being used (at all, never mind his full potential) and returns as Curry Man. And AJ Styles, the man that to me was a breath of fresh air in the world of professional wrestling, is now sat to push the biggest gimmick in pro wrestling. The Olympic Gimp Medallist, you know I hope another gold medallist goes into pro wrestling so that Kurt can no longer plug that he’s the “only one”.
AJ needs to get smart, he’s wasting away in TNA… I think WWE know he could carry ECW along with Punk and Nitro. When is he going to stop taking the crap, it’s only a matter of time.

Personally, I do think that after a while the whole AJ /Angle feud got stupid. I liked the whole relationship between AJ and Karen. And Karen betrayed Kurt contrary to what a lot of people thought she was gonna do. Karen betrayed too many people to betray AJ. I think I liked it so much cause I’m a girl. AJ is a TNA icon. If he went to WWE that would be like metaphorically stepping on the TNA name. He said himself that he doesn’t like WWE and he will not work for them. They’ve tried to get him over there on more than one occassion and he said no. I admire that personally. It would be so much easier for him to work with WWE and get more money, but he’d rarely get to visit his family. And he loves his family more than anything. TNA ppl get more free time than WWE guys do.
