WWE Royal Rumble thoughts from The Eagle
Now The Eagle didn’t get to see the Royal Rumble live but I have read all the recaps and well your favorite bird got something to say. So I will break down every match and give you my quick thoughts.
Ric Flair defeated WWE U.S. Champion MVP in a Non-Title Match.
This was expected. I was surprised to see that Flair used the Figure Four to get the win. Some may argue that the way he loss will hurt MVP… well I don’t think so. Ric Flair is without a doubt one of the greatest of all time and losing to him with his signature move will not hurt MVP or his future.
JBL defeated Chris Jericho via DQ
Now the way The Eagle has been told… this match was brutal. I am glad that they showed that side of Jericho. I think in the long run it will help his character. I just don’t know where they go from here.
Edge defeated Rey Mysterio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Eagle said there was no way the Mysterio was walking out of The Rumble with the title and I was right. From what I have been told this was a great match. I would have loved to see Edge’s mid air spear to get the win. I still think that between now and Mania there will be a build up to a Edge vs The Undertaker.
Randy Orton defeated Jeff Hardy to retain the WWE Championship
Again this is no surprise to The Eagle. Don’t get me wrong… I love Jeff Hardy and I think his push is legit and deserving but I know WWE wasn’t going to put the gold on him just yet. I am hoping that soon they will… cause I think it will help the company. Once again the Champion in this match comes out of no where to hit his signature move… the RKO. I know people may disagree but Randy Orton is a good WWE Champion. Now, with the way the Royal Rumble ended… I have no idea what direction things are going.
Winner of the 2008 Royal Rumble: John Cena
Now first before I get to how I feel about the winner… let me tell you my thoughts on the other events. First…. Having Rowdy Roddy Piper and Jimmy “SuperFly” Snuka come out to renew their rivalry was awesome. I can remember watching them as kids. What I don’t understand is how Hornswoggle got eliminated just because Finley got a DQ. In case you missed it… Finley went crazy using his shillelagh to attack everyone. This is resulted in a DQ (which The Eagle has never heard of happening before) and the understanding is that Hornswoggle got DQed also. This is not fair but it does leave a door open for WWE to say that Hornswoggle was never eliminated. I guess we will see if that’s the plan or not.
As far as the surprise…. Well this could go either way. First like or not you have to give props to WWE for having everyone fooled. I don’t think that anyone expected Cena to return last night… let alone win. Now the thing that gets me is the fan reaction. According to every report that I read… the fans booed Cena like crazy. Maybe some are right when they say that its time for a Cena heel turn. It looks like Cena vs Orton for the WWE Title at WrestleMania. I am not sure what this means for Triple H now. There could be a short Cena/Triple H program… maybe even a match at No Way Out. I guess we will see where this leaves The Game in the title picture.
